The reason I exist as a printmaker/publisher is not really just to make beautiful prints -of course, it’s great when we do, and everyone’s happy- but it’s for the marvel of collaboration: listening, being present, responding to ideas, witnessing and sharing and helping to crystallize what the artists are searching for. It’s about moments before and during experimentation.
As a printer, once the artist is happy and has gone home, you’re left to do the actual print run, one by one. This process is akin to a good sporting event -to make thirty, forty, or more beautiful copies in a given time frame, it’s hard, you exert yourself, remaining focused, not answering the phone, working yourself up into some sort of trance until it’s finished. But what really counts is everything that leads up to it, the part that shapes an idea into an image, an image that justifies itself as a printed piece. You can’t fool around with prints. Prints don’t lie.
